MGI Engineering has welcomed the publication of the UK Government’s Defence Investment Plan, which sets out major investment priorities for UK defence over the next four years, including a proposed £5 billion commitment to drones and autonomous systems.

Published on 30 June 2026, the Defence Investment Plan outlines how the Government intends to modernise UK military capability, strengthen warfighting readiness and support British industry. The commitment to drone technology reflects the growing importance of uncrewed and autonomous systems in future defence operations, including strike, surveillance, maritime, land and collaborative capabilities.

Mike Gascoyne, CEO of MGI Engineering, said:

“The Government’s commitment to invest £5 billion in drones is a significant signal that autonomous systems are now recognised as a core part of the UK’s future defence capability. It reflects the changing character of modern warfare, where uncrewed systems can deliver greater agility, persistence and operational effectiveness across a wide range of missions.

“For UK SMEs this is particularly encouraging, as we have the ability to move quickly, develop new technologies at pace and turn concepts into deployable capability far faster than traditional procurement cycles have often allowed.

“The real opportunity now is to ensure this investment reaches the companies driving innovation across the UK defence industrial base. By backing British SMEs alongside larger primes, the government can accelerate capability into the hands of forces across land, sea, and air, while strengthening sovereign engineering expertise, supporting skilled jobs and creating technologies with strong export potential.

“This announcement is a positive step, and we look forward to seeing how the investment is translated into programmes that encourage innovation, collaboration and rapid capability development.”

MGI Engineering has continued to apply its Formula 1-derived engineering methodologies to the rapid design, prototyping and manufacture of autonomous systems. Its work in the defence sector focuses on delivering scalable, low unit cost platforms that can be developed and iterated at pace in response to changing operational requirements.

The Defence Investment Plan’s emphasis on drones and autonomous systems underlines the increasing role of agile engineering, rapid prototyping and UK sovereign capability in meeting future defence needs.

MGI believes that the effective deployment of this investment will depend on close collaboration between government, the armed forces, prime contractors and specialist SMEs able to bring forward practical, innovative and deployable technologies at speed.
